Around 2:45 PM on March 28, 2022, Patrolman David Atkinson with the Cape May Police Department responded to Swede Things in America at 307 Washington Street on a report of a shoplifting that had taken place. As it was reported that the suspect was fleeing, Patrolman Atkinson began a foot patrol while Patrolman Alexander Pruzinski responded to the store to take the report. Around the same time, Lieutenants Joseph Walker and Kristopher Mazza were placing “No Parking” signs on the 400 block of Carpenters Lane when they were informed by a passerby that a robbery had probably taken place on the mall. They got into their patrol car and radioed Cape May County Communications before learning that a female with red hair was suspected of shoplifting. While driving south on Ocean Street in the vicinity of Washington Street, they located a female with red hair matching this description. When Lieutenant Mazza instructed her to stop, she attempted to and headed towards Hughes Street. She was eventually located in a backyard on Hughes Street. After she was located, the suspect was identified as Adele. Other officers canvassed the area and eventually found merchandise that Adele had allegedly stolen from the gift shop. Based on their suspicion, Adele was placed under arrest. A search of her bag revealed that she was in possession of a significant amount of cash, which was later counted and tallied at over $10,000 back at the station. After Adele was placed under arrest, Sergeant Murphy transported her to the Cape May Police Department for further processing. At the station, it was revealed that she had an outstanding warrant from Brick Township, and she also had a record of multiple prior arrests. She also claimed to have a bank receipt to account for having over $10,000 in cash. After Adele was processed and she posted bail for $250 from her warrant out of Brick Township, Adele was released on a summons. She was charged with shoplifting under 2C:20-11B(2) for the incident in Cape May as well. The items that she had allegedly stolen from the gift shop were determined to be a baseball cap, gloves, a black beanie hat, a small bag, and a key chain. Court records indicate that Adele would later go on to be arrested multiple times in Point Pleasant Beach, Eatontown, and Brick Township. Some of those cases are still pending in court as of July 21, 2024. ---------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information). All videos and case documents were obtained pursuant to the New Jersey Open Public Records Act, N.J.S.A. 47:1A-1 et seq. (P.L. 2001, c. 404). Defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty. The New Jersey Supreme Court has previously affirmed in Salzano v. North Jersey Media Group, 993 A.2d 778 (2010) that “The fair-report privilege reflects the judgment that the need, in a self-governing society, for free-flowing information about matters of public interest outweighs concerns over the uncompensated injury to a person's reputation.” This video advances a compelling public interest. The summary of events was based on records that are “open to public view through open access to public records” as defined in the Salzano case. In Ramos v. Flowers, 429 N.J. Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.
