Around 11:45 PM on March 29, 2025, Patrolman Joseph Buono with the Rochelle Park Police Department was dispatched to the scene of a motor vehicle crash on Rochelle Avenue in the vicinity of Central Avenue. He arrived on scene and noticed that a blue 2012 Toyota Rav4 had crashed into a fire hydrant, and the hydrant was slightly displaced. The Toyota Rav4 sustained severe front-end damages and there was airbag deployment inside the vehicle. The driver of the Toyota was identified as Nancy Lopez, and she was driving with her 11-year-old daughter at the time of the crash. As Patrolman Buono was speaking with Nancy, he detected the odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment. Nancy said that she was driving her daughter home from a birthday party, and blamed her for distracting her before she crashed. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Nancy was asked to perform field sobriety exercises. Her poor performance on the field sobriety exercises confirmed his suspicions of impairment, and she was placed under arrest for operating under the influence. As she was being transported to the station, her husband Nixon Jordan arrived at the scene of the crash despite being advised not to. At this time, he was asked to perform field sobriety exercises because he also displayed indicators of impairment. His poor performance on the field sobriety exercises indicated that he was also impaired, so Sergeant Ryan Burke placed him under arrest for operating under the influence. Both Nancy and Nixon agreed to submit breath samples at the station. Nancy's BAC level was determined to be 0.13%, while Nixon's BAC level was determined to be 0.12%, which were both above the legal limit of 0.08%. Both Nancy and Nixon were eventually released to Frank Ramos pending their court appearances. Nancy was issued the following traffic citations: -Operating under the influence (39:4-50) -Reckless driving (39:4-96) -Careless driving (39:4-97) -Traffic on marked lanes (39:4-88) -Improper driving on sidewalk (39:4-71) Nancy was also criminally charged with endangering a child (2C:24-4A(2)). Nixon was issued the following traffic citations: -Operating under the influence (39:4-50) -Careless driving (39:4-97) On July 22, 2025, Nancy pleaded guilty to operating under the influence. As a result of her conviction, she had to use an ignition interlock device for 7 months, spend 12 hours at an intoxicated driver resource center, and pay a total of $690 in fines. On August 27, 2025, Nixon pleaded guilty to operating under the influence. As a result of his conviction, he had to use an ignition interlock device for 3 months, spend 12 hours at an intoxicated driver resource center, and pay a total of $640 in fines. The careless driving citation was dismissed as part of a plea agreement. ---------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information). (P.L. 2001, c. 404). Defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty. The New Jersey Supreme Court has previously affirmed in Salzano v. North Jersey Media Group, 993 A.2d 778 (2010) that “The fair-report privilege reflects the judgment that the need, in a self-governing society, for free-flowing information about matters of public interest outweighs concerns over the uncompensated injury to a person's reputation.” This video advances a compelling public interest. The summary of events was based on records that are “open to public view through open access to public records” as defined in the Salzano case. In Ramos v. Flowers, 429 N.J. Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.
