On February 2, 2025, Whitman County Sheriff's Deputy Petersen stopped a vehicle for several traffic violations. The vehicle was being driven by a 19-year-old Washington State University student. She initially admitted to consuming 1 seltzer. That prompted Deputy Petersen to ask the woman to step out of the vehicle in order to perform standardized field sobriety tests. After completing the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, Deputy Petersen knew that the woman had consumed more than one alcoholic beverage. She then admitted to consuming 3 shots in addition to the 1 seltzer. She was asked to submit to a portable breath test (PBT) and the result was 0.108% BAC, more than 5 times the legal limit for someone under 21 years of age. She was placed under arrest and was transported to the Pullman Police Station. After submitting to an evidential breath test, she was transported to the Whitman County Jail in Colfax, WA. All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
