Around 1:54 AM on March 13, 2023, Officer Alex Perez with the Millville Police Department was dispatched to a report of a female sleeping behind the wheel of a white 2016 Hyundai Sonata. After he and Officer Adam Thompson arrived on scene, he observed the driver driving onto the curb after he attempted to make contact with her. The vehicle nearly struck a parked car before coming to a stop. Officer Perez made contact with the driver, who was identified later as Breanna. Officer Perez and Officer Thompson asked her if she had anything to drink, but she denied consuming alcohol. Since they still suspected impairment, Breanna was asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises. Breanna eventually complied with their instructions and exited the vehicle. Officer Perez started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test and he observed clues of impairment. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test, and Breanna failed to touch heel-to-toe on each step while displaying a lack of balance. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Breanna did not raise her foot in the proper fashion and put her foot down before the test was complete. Based on her erratic driving, her lack of balance, and her inability to satisfactorily perform the field sobriety exercises, she was placed under arrest for DWI. After she was placed under arrest, her vehicle was impounded for a 12-hour hold according to John’s Law. Officer Perez transported her to the Millville Police Department for further processing. At the station, he read her the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators and she agreed to provide breath samples for testing. Her BAC level was 0.00%, so she was asked to provide a urine sample. While she initially refused to provide a urine sample, she eventually gave a urine sample after a warrant was issued. The urine test would later confirm the presence of Alprazolam and 2 other prohibited substances.
