Thinking about becoming a deputy? Corporal Jim Lancia from the Training Division shares what incoming recruits should work on BEFORE they even apply: physical fitness and conversational skills. It goes without saying that you need to be prepared for the physical demands of this job because your fellow deputies and community members are counting on you to keep them safe. But the other equally important skill may surprise some people: the ability to connect with people conversationally. There's real power in meeting someone where they're at and helping them through a situation. Whether you're de-escalating someone in crisis or conducting a traffic stop, what you say can change the outcome. Corporal Lancia shares his thoughts on this and more on the latest episode of 56: A Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Podcast. Listen wherever you get your podcasts.
