LIBERTYVILLE TOWNSHIP, IL – On May 26th, 2020 at 8:30PM, an officer with the Mundelein Police Department traveling in an unmarked police car stopped a vehicle driving over the speed limit on N. Diamond Lake Road. As the vehicle pulled into a parking lot, the officer activated his emergency lights and stopped the 2011 Chevrolet Impala. The officer approached the driver side of the vehicle and detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from inside the vehicle. The officer observed the suspect to have bloodshot, glassy eyes with thick tongued speech. The suspect claimed that he was visiting a friend to have a bonfire and that he worked at an Amazon warehouse. The officer asked the suspect to step out of the vehicle to which he complied. Once outside the vehicle, the officer administered a field sobriety test. For the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, the suspect displayed a lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The officer had to repeatedly remind the suspect to not move his head during the exercise. For the walk-and-turn test, the suspect continually claimed that his "feet don't go straight." The suspect made an incorrect turn, stepped off line multiple times, and used his arms for balance. The suspect proceeded to sway while balancing, used his arms for balance, put his foot down multiple times, and was overall unable to perform the one leg stand. At the conclusion of the tests, the suspect was arrested for driving under the influence, or DUI. While inventorying the vehicle, the officer discovered a grinder with cannabis inside. Once the suspect was transported to the Mundelein Police Department, he claimed that he knew how to search packages by last names and that the officers' packages may be damaged. When accused of making threatening statements, the suspect claimed that that was a joke. Following the 20-minute observation period, the suspect submitted to an evidentiary breath test. As the reading was higher than expected, he was given the opportunity to submit a preliminary breath sample which yielded a result of .233% breath alcohol content.
