Around 10:48 PM on July 1, 2023, Deputy Blake Welch with the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a report of a reckless driver in the area of Highway 90 and Woodbine Road. They were advised that a black Toyota Camry had nearly struck another vehicle and driven on the wrong side of the road. He located a 2012 Toyota Camry matching this description and observed the driver drive over the fog line and into the grass on Quinette Road near Whitley Lane. He activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, and the driver pulled over in the vicinity of Quinette Road and Diamond Creek Drive. He exited the vehicle and made contact with the driver of the Camry, who was identified as 19-year-old Sarah. As he was speaking with Sarah, he detected the odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment. She told the Deputy that she was coming from the beach and that she was headed back home. There were open containers of alcohol in plain view inside the vehicle. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Sarah was asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises after Sergeant Cook arrived on scene to assist. Deputy Welch started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During the HGN test, Deputy Welch observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Sarah did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and took an incorrect number of steps. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test. During the One Leg Stand test, Sarah failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and put her foot down before the test was complete. Based on her erratic driving, her indicators of impairment, the open containers inside the vehicle, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Deputy Welch told Sarah that she was being placed under arrest for DUI. After she was placed inside the patrol car, she slipped her cuffs on 2 separate occasions. Sarah was eventually transported to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office for further processing. At the jail, she agreed to submit breath samples. Her breath samples indicated BAC levels of .172 g/210ml and .176 g/210ml, which were more than double the legal limit of 0.08% for drivers over 21. She was charged with a DUI (316.193(4)) and failure to obey a traffic control device. Sarah was eventually released pending her court appearance on a $2500 bond. ---------------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information).
