A black Honda had backed into a parked car in the crowded lot. Behind the wheel — 28-year-old Juliana Florabasiliolive from Long Branch, NJ. When officers approached, Juliana said she didn’t speak much English — only Portuguese. That language barrier turned an already tense DWI investigation into a long and frustrating ordeal. Officers even tried finding someone from another town who spoke Portuguese or Spanish, but no one was available that night. As Sergeant Fisler and Patrolman Susino began field sobriety tests, it quickly became clear something was wrong. Juliana struggled to follow directions, lost balance multiple times, and her breath carried a strong smell of alcohol. A bouncer from Donovan’s Reef later confirmed she had been drinking beer and rum buckets inside before getting into her car. After failing multiple sobriety tests — including Walk-and-Turn, One-Leg Stand, and Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) — Juliana was placed under arrest for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). She was read her Miranda rights in Portuguese, which she acknowledged and signed. Since the local towing service was unavailable, Sergeant Fisler personally moved Juliana’s car to the police station’s sally port for safekeeping.
