Around 5:32 PM on November 25, 2024, Officer Craig Sosnowski with the Freehold Township Police Department responded a 3-car motor vehicle accident in the area of West Main Street and Schlecthweg Way. He arrived on scene and made contact with a female who was identified as the driver of a white 2023 Nissan Sentra. The Nissan Sentra was totaled, while a 2013 Dodge Caravan and 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe had also sustained significant damages. It was later determined that the driver of the Nissan Sentra struck a Dodge Caravan that was stopped in traffic, and the Dodge Caravan subsequently struck the Hyundai Santa Fe based on the impact of the crash. The driver of the Hyundai Santa Fe complained of back pain resulting from the collision. The driver of the Nissan Sentra was identified as 22-year-old Beatriz Urquia. As he started speaking with Beatriz, Officer Sosnowski detected the odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment. Beatriz denied consuming any alcohol, but the officers were told by others that she had discarded open containers of alcohol from her vehicle. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Beatriz was asked to perform field sobriety exercises. The first exercise was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During the HGN test, Officer Sosnowski observed the lack of smooth, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Beatriz did not touch heel-to-toe on each step, took an incorrect number of steps, and turned improperly. Despite multiple attempts, the test was not completed successfully. Officer Sosnowski decided to not attempt the One Leg Stand test. Based on the motor vehicle crash, the odor of alcohol, the open container in her vehicle, and her inability to complete the field sobriety exercises, Officer Sosnowski placed Beatriz under arrest for driving under the influence. Her vehicle was impounded for a 12-hour hold according to John’s Law. Officer Sosnowski transported Beatriz to the Freehold Township Police Department for further processing. At the station, Officer Sosnowski read Beatriz the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators, and she initially agreed submit breath samples. However, she later refused to submit breath samples when the machine was ready. After the officers finished processing her, Beatriz was eventually released to a sober adult pending her court appearance. Officer Sosnowski issued Beatriz the following citations: -Operating under the influence (39:4-50) -Consent to take samples of breath (39:4-50.2) -Reckless driving (39:4-96) -No liability insurance coverage on motor vehicle (39:6B-2) -Open container (39:4-51B) Court records indicate that on April 22, 2025, Beatriz pleaded guilty to operating under the influence. As a result of her guilty plea, Beatriz had to use an ignition interlock device for 3 months, spend 12 months at an intoxicated driver resource center, and pay a total of $690 in fines. She was also given a suspended sentence of 2 days in jail. The other 4 citations were dismissed as part of a plea agreement. Beatriz was later arrested again for disorderly conduct (2C:33-2A(2)) in Freehold Borough, New Jersey on July 28, 2025. ---------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information). (P.L. 2024, c.16). Defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty. The New Jersey Supreme Court has previously affirmed in Salzano v. North Jersey Media Group, 993 A.2d 778 (2010) that “The fair-report privilege reflects the judgment that the need, in a self-governing society, for free-flowing information about matters of public interest outweighs concerns over the uncompensated injury to a person's reputation.” This video advances a compelling public interest. The summary of events was based on records that are “open to public view through open access to public records” as defined in the Salzano case. In Ramos v. Flowers, 429 N.J. Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.
