It flew south on Genesse Road near Lake Street. No headlights cut through the dark. Commander Oliver turned on his lights. He stopped the Infiniti after it turned west onto Lake Street. Officer Haske spoke to the passenger. Commander Oliver approached the driver. The driver's name was Vanessa. Vanessa confessed she had traveled from Ibiza to Waukegan. Officer Haske requested that Vanessa step out of her car. As he talked to her, he noticed signs she might be impaired. Vanessa admitted to drinking alcohol earlier that night. The officer then asked Vanessa to do some roadside tests. He planned to start with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. She refused to do any of the exercises. After that, Officer Haske handcuffed Vanessa. He told her she was under arrest for driving under the influence. Officer McElroy arrived to take Vanessa to the Waukegan station. Vanessa paused, then entered the squad car. McElroy drove her to the station. At the station, Officer Haske met them. Haske gave Vanessa a choice. She could try the field sobriety exercises again. Vanessa agreed and prepared to perform the tests. Officer Haske began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. He noticed issues in her eye movements. Her eyes lacked smooth pursuit. He saw distinct nystagmus at maximum deviation. Nystagmus started before 45 degrees. Vertical nystagmus was also present. Next, he asked her to do the Walk and Turn test. She refused. She also refused the One Leg Stand test. Finally, she agreed to try the Modified Romberg Balance test. At 2:45 AM, she heard the Warning to Motorist form and then agreed to take a breath test. The test showed her BAC was 0.146%, more than the 0.08% legal limit. Officers released her from the station, and she now awaits her court date. Officer Haske drove her home that night. Vanessa received tickets for DUI, having a BAC over 0.08, no headlamps, and transporting alcohol illegally. Vanessa's legal troubles continued into the summer. On June 22, 2024, she was arrested for DUI. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office made the arrest in Waukegan, Illinois. Before that, on May 16, 2024, she faced charges in Lake Forest, Illinois. This arrest was for driving with a suspended license. Earlier that month, on May 12, 2024, Vanessa was arrested for retail theft in Waukegan, Illinois. 0:55 I had 2 drinks.
