OTTAWA HILLS, OH - On August 26th, 2022 at 1:24AM, Ottawa Hills Police observed a vehicle traveling through a flashing red light on W. Bancroft St. The officer then began to follow the vehicle eastbound on the street before eventually catching up to the driver on Secor Rd. outside the University of Toledo's west entrance. While the officer was speaking to the suspect, an odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from the vehicle. When asked if she had anything to drink the suspect claimed that she had none. Eventually, the secondary officer asked the suspect to step out of the vehicle to provide a portable breath test (PBT) to which she agreed. After several attempts, the reading on the PBT came back inconclusive. The suspect then consented to performing a standardized field sobriety test. During the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, the officer observed lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystabmus at maximum deviation, and onset to nystabmus prior to 45 degrees. For the walk-and-turn test, the suspect did not walk heel to toe, count the steps aloud, performed an improper turn, and took too many steps. For the one leg stand test, the suspect had to be reminded to count and further miscounted while performing the test. A second PBT was offered to the suspect to which she agreed. The breath test yielded a result of .05% BrAC. As the suspect was under 21 years of age, this was over the .02% BrAC limit to drive in the State of Ohio. Following a brief discussion with another officer on scene, the primary officer arrested the suspect. She was charged with two counts of operating a vehicle under the influence, or OVI.
