On July 15, 2024. An officer from the Marshfield Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle that was swerving and speeding. When the officer activated her emergency lights, the vehicle began fleeing. The pursuit lasted approximately 34 miles and reached speeds over 100 MPH. Officers terminated the pursuit when the vehicle entered a dead end road. The suspect vehicle was found unoccupied and stuck in a marshy field at the end of the road. A records check of the truck showed that it was owned by a dealership. An officer called them and spoke with a Manager who stated that he suspected that an employee of his named Coden was the driver. The manager explained that Coden had previous employment issues as well as contacts with law enforcement. He advised Coden was on his last chance working with them, and that Coden is a detailer with the company and sometimes moves cars between dealerships. The manager said Coden was not supposed to have the truck at that time and was able to provide a video of Coden leaving the parking lot earlier in the day with a blue GMC Sierra. While we were waiting for a tow for the vehicle, a man called officers stating that he was currently looking for his son (Tommy) who had called him saying he was a passenger in a vehicle that had fled. He was now lost and looking for help. Tommy was located by deputies and said that he was a passenger in the vehicle and. He said that his friend Coden was driving and stated that he feared for his life and continued to ask Coden to stop, however, he just continued on. Tommy said he ran at the end because he was mostly scared and Coden continued to yell at him to “run, run, run”. Tommy said that he didn't know where Coden went. The officer wrote the following in her report. “Tommy's demeanor appeared to be very upset. He was crying to the point where I could see the water welling in his eyes. He also appeared to be visibly shaken up and was physically shaking. I did ask Tommy if he had any phone conversations with Coden about the pursuit and he said no. I did know that I would have to continue this investigation but decided to release Tommy at that time. Tommy said that specifically the vehicle belonged to Coden and suspected that it was Coden's work truck.” Officers then went to Codens house and placed him under arrest, he was searched and transported to jail. Coden also indicated that he was not driving and that Tommy was the driver which contradicted his statements before when he said the vehicle was stolen. Officers determined that due to Tommy saying that Coden was driving, the conversation with the dealership, and Coden falsely reporting his vehicle as stolen was enough to request charges for felony fleeing. Coden invoked his rights to remain silent and did not say much at all. He was found guilty for Vehicle Operator Flee/Elude Officer. Coden was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to pay a $518 fine. This video is for educational purposes only.
