On February 28, 2023, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, an officer observed a vehicle tailgating another vehicle, maintaining a dangerous distance of approximately five feet, especially concerning given the wet and icy road conditions due to near-freezing temperatures. As the officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop at a gas station, the vehicle quickly accelerated, exiting the parking lot and initiating a pursuit. During the chase, the vehicle reached a speed of 55 MPH in a 30 MPH zone, made an unsafe lane deviation, and ran a red light. Eventually, the vehicle slowed down and pulled into a nearby parking lot. The officer conducted a felony traffic stop, pointing his department-issued firearm at the sole occupant of the vehicle. The driver, later identified as David, complied with the officer's commands and was taken into custody without further incident. During a subsequent search, Officers discovered a clear pipe with a bubble at the end containing a small amount of a white substance, believed to be meth amphetamine based on the officer's training and experience. No other contraband was found in the vehicle. David was charged with vehicle operator fleeing/eluding, possession of drug paraphernalia operating while revoked, automobile following too closely, failure to obey traffic signal, unsafe lane deviation, and speeding on city highway (25-29MPH).
