It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At 4:34 a.m. on April 28, 2024, Deputy Patrick Blackwood patrolled Highway 87 in Santa Rosa County. He spotted a 2011 Toyota Tacoma weaving across lanes northbound near the Yellow River Bridge. Lights flashing, he pulled the truck over close to Nichols Lake Road. Stepping out, he approached the driver—a 21-year-old woman named Lacey Edwards. As they talked, a strong smell of alcohol hit him. He noticed signs she was impaired. Her passenger looked very drunk and had thrown up. Lacey first said she hadn't drunk anything. Later, she confessed to drinking in Panama City. She explained she was driving home to Bonifay, a long trip from Milton. Blackwood held off on his DUI check until Deputy Carey arrived to help. Suspicious of her state, he asked Lacey to do field sobriety tests. First came the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus exam. Blackwood saw her eyes jerk without smooth tracking. They showed clear shakes at the edge and started too soon, before 45 degrees. Next, she tried the Walk and Turn test. Lacey missed heel-to-toe steps. She took 27 steps before she turned around. For the One Leg Stand, she couldn't lift her foot right. The test ended early—safety reasons. Her wild driving, clear signs of impairment, and poor test results sealed it. Blackwood arrested her for DUI. Lacey mentioned her mom was a lieutenant correctional officer at Holmes County Jail. They took her to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office for booking. There, she agreed to a breath test. Results showed 0.215 and 0.218 grams per 210 milliliters—more than twice the 0.08 legal limit. Charges hit her for DUI under 316.193(1)(B) and improper lane use under 316.089(1). She posted a $500 bond and went free until court. 10:20 Intoximicated?
