Around 12:39 AM on August 31, 2023, Officers Nicolas Izquierdo and Javier Casas of the Boca Raton Police Department were on patrol in the parking lot of The Standard, a popular restaurant and bar in Boca Raton, Florida. Around this time, the officers were flagged down by people in the parking lot informing them that a white 2020 Toyota C-HR had just struck two vehicles (a 2017 Audi and a 2017 Ford) and was now fleeing the scene. Officer Izquierdo observed the vehicle leave the parking lot and head southbound on SE Mizner Boulevard. The officers began following the vehicle and initiated a pursuit. During their pursuit, the noticed the vehicle turn left to go southbound on South Federal Highway. On South Federal Highway, they noticed that the driver was swerving between lanes. Eventually, the officers were able to initiate a traffic stop in the vicinity of South Federal Highway and SE 15th Street. Once the vehicle was stopped, they made contact with the driver, who was identified as 39-year-old Sissi Medina. Officer Izquierdo asked Sissi if she was aware what had happened, she stated that she was trying to drive home. When he subsequently asked Sissi if she had been involved in a crash, Sissi was in denial. During this time, Officer Stephenson responded to the scene of the motor vehicle accident and made contact with the owners of the 2 damaged vehicles. When reviewing CCTV footage, Officer Stephenson was able to confirm that Sissi’s vehicle was responsible for striking those two vehicles. Officer Izquierdo suspected that Sissi was impaired because she was driving erratically, her eyes were red and glassy, and she seemed confused and disoriented. Sissi was asked how much she had to drink, and she admitted to consuming 3 glasses of wine. Based on his suspicion of impairment and her admission to consuming alcohol, he informed Sissi that his crash investigation was complete, and that he would now be initiating a DUI investigation. He read Sissi her rights, and asked her to perform some field sobriety exercises. Sissi agreed to perform them. The first exercise was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, and Officer Izquierdo observed a lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Sissi did not walk heel-to-toe, used her arms for balance, turned improperly, and took and incorrect number of steps. The third field sobriety exercise was the One Leg Stand test. During the One Leg Stand test, Sissi failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion while displaying a lack of balance. The fourth field sobriety exercise was the Finger to Nose test. During the Finger to Nose test, Sissi only raised the corresponding hand and never touched her nose with the hand as instructed to do so. The final exercise was the Modified Romberg Balance test, which involved closing her eyes and estimating the passage of 30 seconds. Sissi estimated the passage of 30 seconds in 22 seconds. Based on the witness accounts of her leaving an accident scene, CCTV footage, her erratic driving patterns, her admission to consuming alcohol in the hours prior, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Officer Izquierdo placed Sissi under arrest for driving under the influence. After Sissi was placed under arrest, her vehicle was searched and impounded by Westway Towing. Sissi was transported without incident to the Central Breath Testing (CBT) facility at the Pinellas County Jail. At the Boca Raton Police Department, Sissi consented to submit breath samples for testing. Officer Price responded to BRPD booking and administered the breathalyzer machine. Sissi’s results indicated that her BAC was at 0.200%, which is more than double the legal limit of 0.08%. After the breathalyzer test, Sissi was transported by Officer Price to Boca Raton Regional Hospital, and subsequently transported to the County Jail after she was medically cleared. Officer Izquierdo issued her the following citations: Driving under the influence, two counts of leaving the scene of a crash, two counts of DUI property damage, and driving a vehicle without lights at night ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information).
