Around 1:55 AM on August 17, 2021, Officer Gregory Barlaug with the Tampa Police Department observed a red 2011 Jeep swerving and driving more than 10 MPH over the speed limit. After he observed the driver turn erratically, he activated his lights to initiate a traffic stop. The driver pulled over in the vicinity of Armenia Avenue North and Green Street West. The officer made contact with the driver, who was identified as Layla Bertoune. As he was speaking with her, he observed indicators of impairment and detected the odor of alcohol. She told the officer that she was heading home, and she would later admit that she had consumed alcohol earlier that evening. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Layla was asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises. Officer Barlaug started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Layla did not touch heel-to-toe on each step. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Layla failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion. Based on her traffic infraction, her indicators of impairment, her admission to consuming alcohol earlier that evening, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Layla was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. After she was placed under arrest, her friend attempted to argue with the officers before walking away. Layla was transported by Officer Barlaug to the Orient Road Jail for further processing. She agreed to submit to a breath test and her BrAC results were 0.133 and 0.137, which were over the legal limit of 0.08. She was charged with a DUI (316.193) and eventually released pending her court appearance. ---------------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information).
