EUSTIS, FL - At 9:12PM on January 27th, 2020 Eustis Police investigated a female driver with a badly damaged car who was at fault in a car accident. The suspect was asked to step out of the vehicle to tell her side of the story in the incident, but instead spoke of her troubled life and children. The officer asked the suspect if she had been drinking and she claimed that she had been doing so at a friend's house. The suspect claimed to have been barely drinking out of a bottle of vodka. When asked, the suspect consented to performing a field sobriety test (FST). The suspect was moved to an adjacent parking lot to start the exercises beginning with the horizontal nystagmus test. As the two officers discussed who would take notes and who would administer the tests, the suspect interjected and asked if they were inquiring about the liquor in her car. The lead officer said, "no," then inquired whereupon the suspect admitted to having alcohol in her vehicle. The officer observed that the suspect was unable to smoothly follow his pen and had distinct nystagmus at maximum deviation. The officer next explained how to perform the walk-and-turn test. The suspect struggled with balance and stumbled several times throughout the exercise. The suspect stopped after taking 10 steps forward and had to be reminded of taking nine steps back. While performing the one leg stand test, the suspect failed to say, "one-thousand," when counting, lost balance several times, and counting from 16 on, had to place her hand on the front of the police cruiser for balance. The officer asked the suspect to let go of the car and walk back towards the general area where the FST was being administered. The suspect was observed swaying while standing and being explained the finger to nose test by the officer. The suspect hesitated on one iteration when asked to touch her nose with her left finger, she incorrectly started moving her right arm. Following the finger to nose test, the suspect was arrested for driving under the influene (DUI). The suspect immediately started sobbing heavily and telling the officer her difficult position in life. In the search of the suspect's vehicle, the police found two separate liquor containers and a handgun which was not disclosed to the officers before the discovery. She claimed that the 9mm belonged to her, but that she did not have a permit.
