Per Champlin Police: "At about 2:30 pm, on March 22,2022, a Champlin police officer made a traffic stop of a speeding Prius. During that traffic stop, the officer noticed indications that the driver might be intoxicated. He also found that the driver’s MN driver’s license was Cancelled-Inimical to Public Safety. Because it was raining at the time, the officer conducted some preliminary field sobriety testing while the driver was still in his car. After the testing, the officer asked the driver to step out of the vehicle. At that time, the driver put the car into gear and sped away. The officers felt that the driver was too intoxicated to let him continue driving, so they pursued the vehicle and attempted a PIT maneuver as soon as they could. That technique was only partially effective. (This) video starts on the second time the officer made contact with the fleeing vehicle. A second squad car entered the pursuit and also performed a PIT maneuver that put the suspect into the median. The suspect was able to regain control of his car before the officers could effectively box him in. An attempt to pin the vehicle between the two squad cars damaged the Charger and rendered it unable to continue in the pursuit. The suspect vehicle was also damaged and one of the rear wheels became unstable. Because of that wheel, the suspect spun himself out a little over a minute later. The suspect then fled on foot where he was apprehended by another Champlin officer and a Hennepin County K-9 unit. "Two officers suffered minor injuries and were treated and released. The suspect also suffered minor injuries from the K-9. The suspect was booked at the Hennepin County Jail for multiple offenses. Criminal charges are still pending. Our office does not typically identify suspects until they have been formally charged. The suspect is a 37-year-old male and he has at least five prior DWI or alcohol and drug related driving offenses. Per @MidwestCrime on Facebook: "Shortly before 3pm Champlin PD was in pursuit of a Toyota Prius headed south on 169. The pursuing officer reported that the driver failed a field sobriety test prior to the pursuit. The driver lost control and crashed near 93rd Ave and fled on foot into the nearby cemetery. The suspect was eventually apprehended by a Hennepin County K9 and EMS was started for a dog bite. An officer also requsted another ambulance for himself, sounded like he may have also been bitten."
