NMSP officer Darian Jarrott's report: "On December 16, 2020, I was on routine patrol in Luna County, New Mexico on Interstate 10 (I 10). I was operating a marked New Mexico State Police (NMSP) patrol vehicle, wearing a "BDU" style uniform, clearly displaying my badge of office. At approximately 09:09 hours NMSP dispatch informed me of a call involving a motorist headed westbound on I 10 that had cut off another motorist, brandished a black in color handgun, and had sped off at speeds reaching or exceeding 100 miles per hour. I was headed eastbound looking for the vehicle, described as a gray in color Nissan Rogue SUV with New Jersey license plate R26MBW, when I observed a gray Nissan SUV, heading westbound, passing milepost 90. I executed a U-turn in the median and caught up to the vehicle to verify the license plate. The plate matched the description of the vehicle, I then engaged my emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop. While I had the vehicle pulled over, I identified myself to the driver and passenger and explained my reason for the stop. I asked the occupants to slowly exit the vehicle and to head towards my vehicle. The driver was identified as CJ Bush Simpson. The passenger was identified as Salami Garner. I explained to the driver that there was another vehicle that said that he had cut them off, and that they were speeding. I asked if there were any weapons in the vehicle. Mr. Simpson said that there was a handgun in the glove box, and two more firearms in the trunk. I asked Mr. Simpson if I could look at those weapons and he said that I could. I first observed a Taurus 9mm handgun. The black in color firearm was in a black in color plastic holster, loaded, with a bullet chambered. I took the firearm back to my vehicle for further investigation and had dispatch run a check on the serial number. The next two firearms I checked on were unloaded, in a black case in the trunk of the vehicle. Back at my patrol unit I asked NMSP Officer Munoz to go to the reporting party's location at milepost 74 on I 10 to speak about the incident. The reporting party identified herself as Michele Sullivan, to Officer Munoz. Mrs. Sullivan stated that the man in the gray Nissan had cut her off prior to the Border Patrol Checkpoint, and that she caught up to the vehicle after the checkpoint and that she was attempting to catch the vehicle to give him the middle finger. It was at that time that she 'flipped him the bird,' as she stated, that the driver of the vehicle brandished a black in color handgun in his window, and at that time she backed off. She said that the vehicle sped off going at speeds of 100 miles per hour or more, and that is when she called it in. Once Officer Munoz relayed that information to me, based on the statement given by Mrs. Sullivan and the handgun being in the front of the vehicle, and Mr. Simpson's admission of speeding up after being engaged by the blue vehicle, I believed that there was enough evidence to charge Mr. Simpson with assault with a deadly weapon. Mr. Simpson was arrested, searched, and placed in the back of my patrol vehicle. The black Taurus handgun was taken and processed as evidence in the case. Mr. Simpson was transported to the Deming NMSP office for processing. He was allowed to use his phone, provided water, and was allowed to use the restroom if necessary. He was later transported to the Luna County Detention Center (LCDC) without incident." No Article Chapters: 0:00 Incident 19:38 Charges/Outcome
