On February 12, 2022 at approximately 12:55 AM, Deputy Randy Miller of the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office was on patrol on Stadium Way near Monroe Street in Pullman, Washington. He observed a 2021 Jeep driving with no tail lights. He proceeded to initiate a traffic stop, and the vehicle pulled into the parking lot of Little Caesar’s. The driver, 19-year-old Alyson Newstrom, told the Deputy that she was coming from “Greek Row” but initially denied consuming any alcohol. Since he detected the odor of alcohol, he proceeded to ask Alyson if he could check her eyes, and he noticed a lack of smooth pursuit. Upon further questioning, Alyson would admit to consuming 2 shots approximately 2 hours prior. Based on her admission to consuming alcohol, Deputy Miller afforded her an opportunity to perform voluntary field sobriety tests. Deputies Christopher Olin and Morgan Scharff responded to the scene to assist around this time. The first exercise involved the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), where Deputy Miller observed the lack of smooth pursuit and distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation in both eyes. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test, and Alyson was unable to walk a straight line. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test. During the One Leg Stand test, Alyson was confused on the counting and asked for clarification while still holding her leg up. She counted to 20 and lost balance, causing her to place her foot back on the ground. Following the voluntary field sobriety tests, Alyson was asked to voluntarily take a PBT test. Alyson responded by telling the Deputy that her father used to be a cop, and she ultimately decline to take the PBT. Based on her admission to consuming alcohol, her inability to perform the field sobriety exercises, and her refusal to take the PBT test, Deputy Miller placed Alyson under arrest for driving under the influence. Deputy Olin stayed with the passenger of the vehicle to ensure she had a ride home, while the vehicle was left in a safe location until she was sober. Alyson was subsequently transported to the Pullman Police Department, where she waived her Constitutional rights and agreed to answer questions. Deputy Miller read the Implied Consent Warnings to Alyson, and after she completed the 20-minute observation period, she agreed to take a breathalyzer test. Her Alcotest results indicated a BAC of 0.187%, which was more than double the legal limit of 0.08% for motorists over 21 and 9 times the legal limit of 0.02% for motorists under 21. Following the breathalyzer test, Alyson was transported to the Whitman County Jail in Colfax, Washington with a bail amount of $500. She was cited under RCW 46.61.502 for Driving under the Influence (DUI) and released with a mandatory court date after posting bail. On May 26, 2022, Alyson pleaded guilty under 46.61.502 and 46.61.506 – Driving While Under the Influence (DUI-BREATH .08). She was sentenced to 1 day in jail (with the option to be converted to 15 days of Electronic Home Monitoring (EHM)) followed by 24 months of supervised probation, along with a $43.00 Criminal Conviction Fee, $120.12 DUI Cost Recovery Fee, $600.00 Supervised Probation Fee, and a $1000 fine ($2000 actual fine, $1000 suspended). Her driving privileges in the State of Washington were also suspended for 90 days. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information).
