On April 19, 2026 at approximately 1:10 AM, Officer Phillips with the St. Charles Police Department was dispatched to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the vicinity of S 10th Avenue and South Avenue. He arrived on scene and observed a white 2018 Honda CR-V that was parked facing east on South Avenue at the stop sign for S 10th Avenue. He activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop and made contact with the driver. The driver was slouched forward with her head down, and she did not respond to the officer’s orders to put the vehicle in park. He returned to his vehicle and positioned it in front of her car so that it would not roll into traffic. He did not have any lock out tools in his patrol car and the driver eventually struck his patrol car. After multiple failed attempts to awaken the driver, Officer Phillips broke the driver side window. After the window broke, the driver was awakened. She was eventually identified as Mary Kathryn Naughton. As he was speaking with Mary, he detected the odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment. She was unable to provide any lucid answer as to where she was driving from, but she admitted to consuming alcohol earlier that evening. She was also the designated driver that evening. After Officer Nicholson arrived on scene and Mary was cleared by first responders, she was asked to perform field sobriety exercises. Officer Phillips started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During the HGN test, he observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. He also observed vertical nystagmus. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Mary did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and turned improperly. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Mary failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and used her arms for balance. Based on the odor of alcohol, her admission to drinking earlier that evening, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Officer Phillips placed Mary under arrest for driving under the influence. Her vehicle was impounded by Chad’s Towing. She was transported to the St. Charles Police Department by Officer Nicholson. At the station, Mary agreed to provide breath samples. Her breath test results indicated a BAC level of 0.167%, which was more than double the legal limit of 0.08%. After they finished processing her, she was transported home by Officer Nicholson and released pending her court appearance. Mary was charged with the following: -Driving under the influence - alcohol (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(2)) -Driving under the influence – over 0.08 (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(1)) -Failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident (625 ILCS 5/1-601(a)) ------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information).
