For 27 years, the death of a newborn baby found in Washington Park in Albany, New York, remained an unsolved mystery. Known for decades as “Baby Moses,” the newborn was discovered in September 1997, wrapped in cloth near the park’s Moses statue. Investigators determined that he had been born alive and healthy, but the identity of his mother—and what had happened before his body was abandoned—remained unknown. More than two decades later, advances in DNA technology helped investigators identify Keri Mazzuca as the woman connected to the case. On September 6, 2024, detectives sat across from Mazzuca and began asking seemingly routine questions about her family, her past, and her pregnancies. Then came the subject that threatened to unravel a secret buried for nearly three decades: DNA. This episode of Evidence Lab Interrogation examines Keri Mazzuca’s police interview and the critical moments in which detectives confront inconsistencies in her account and gradually reveal why she is really sitting in that interrogation room. Eight days after the interview, Mazzuca was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, concealment of a human corpse, and tampering with physical evidence. The case ultimately did not go to trial. In February 2025, Mazzuca pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and tampering with physical evidence. On April 18, 2025, she was sentenced to 25 years in state prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision. For 27 years, investigators had evidence but no identified mother and no complete account of what happened to Baby Moses. The interrogation you are about to watch became a crucial part of finally answering those questions. What moment in the interrogation do you think changed everything?
