On January 3, 2025, just after 4:00 a.m., a Kent County Sheriff’s deputy attempted a traffic stop in Plainfield Township, Michigan, after observing a vehicle driving without headlights. The driver fled at a high rate of speed, prompting the deputy to temporarily terminate the pursuit due to unsafe conditions. Shortly afterward, the suspect vehicle crashed into another vehicle and continued fleeing before ultimately striking a utility pole at 5 Mile and Northville Drive. The driver and one passenger fled on foot, while another passenger remained at the scene. Deputies quickly responded, established a perimeter, and requested additional resources, including a Grand Rapids Police K9 unit and a Kent County Sheriff’s Office drone. A check of the vehicle confirmed it had been reported stolen. A K9 successfully tracked and located the driver, who was taken into custody without further incident. A drone, likely equipped with infrared imaging, was then used to search the surrounding area and locate the remaining suspect. The passengers were later released and were not charged. Charges were sought against the driver, though court records for the case were sealed, likely under Michigan’s Holmes Youthful Trainee Act.
