It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: On April 13, 2022, around 11:08 PM, Officers Al-Abed Taha, Nader Awadallah, and Sergeant Shannon Tattoli from the North Bergen Police Department rushed to the Delta gas station at 9280 Kennedy Boulevard. They got a call about an erratic driver who had pulled in there. The officers approached the driver of a black 2021 Jeep. She turned out to be 20-year-old Dilayda Aksoy. She said she was waiting for her friend Luis. She had stopped to grab a cigarette. Dilayda did not own the Jeep. She had no driver's license on her. The key fob was missing from the car. Car thefts were common in the area. So, the officers called the owner. He said he let Luis borrow it. But he never okayed Dilayda to drive. No smell of booze came from her. Still, she seemed off, like she was impaired. The cops suspected she was under the influence. They asked her to step out. She had to do field sobriety tests. Detective Bryan Suarez began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. He spotted all six signs of impairment. He also saw vertical gaze nystagmus. Next came the Walk and Turn test. Dilayda missed heel-to-toe steps. She turned wrong. She took too many or too few steps. The last one was the One Leg Stand. She did not lift her foot right. She put it down too soon. The officers saw enough. She failed the tests badly. They arrested her for driving under the influence. Officer Taha took her to the North Bergen Police Department for booking. There, they read her the standard statement for drivers. She agreed to a breath test. The Alcotest showed 0.00% blood alcohol. But they still thought she was impaired. She turned down a drug recognition expert check. So, they drove her to Hackensack Meridian Palisades Medical Center for blood work. Later tests found cocaine, methamphetamine, Alprazolam, and 7-aminoclonazepam in her blood. Cops gave her these summonses: operating under the influence, consent for breath samples, reckless driving, careless driving, and driving without a license. Court papers show she got convicted of driving under the influence on July 20, 2022. She had to do 12 hours at an intoxicated driver center. She paid $690 in fines. The other four tickets got dropped in a plea deal. Dilayda had arrests before this: theft in Palisades Park, NJ, on January 28, 2020; endangering a child in Edgewater, NJ, on February 24, 2020; theft in Fairview, NJ, on July 10, 2020; receiving stolen property in Passaic, NJ, on October 15, 2020; theft in Ridgefield, NJ, on January 13, 2021; and harassment in Fort Lee, NJ, on March 28, 2022.
