Now, you’ll see the deputy — badge number 385 — escalate quickly, weapon drawn, shouting commands. Meanwhile, the man and his companion are stunned, trying to explain, ‘Hey, it’s a gas pump!’ And yet the deputy doubles down, saying the way he was holding it made it look like a firearm. Here’s the problem: this is a constitutional moment. The Fourth Amendment protects us from unreasonable searches and seizures — and pointing a gun at someone is a use of force.
