On May 10th, 2023, an officer in New Mexico spotted a driver in a red Dodge Magnum repeatedly drifting across marked lane lines. The officer initiated a traffic stop of the vehicle. However, the driver began leading the officer on a slow-paced chase before pulling into a business parking lot. Upon reaching the parking lot, the officer approached the suspect, noticing his slurred speech and a noticeable odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle. The suspect began recording on his cell phone and became increasingly uncooperative. The suspect refused to roll down their window fully or provide his ID as requested. Other officers arrived to assist the officer as the suspect continued arguing and refusing to exit the vehicle. As the standoff progressed, officers warned that the vehicle's window would be broken if the suspect did not exit the vehicle. The suspect finally unlocked his door but refused to exit the vehicle voluntarily. Officers then escorted the individual out of the vehicle and placed him under arrest. During a vehicle search, officers located a small container containing 24 unidentifiable pills in the center console. The suspect was taken to the police department, where he refused to provide a breath sample. Officers learned while identifying the suspect that he had an active warrant for a prior DWI charge and a revoked driver's license.
