Armed suspect dies when he crashed into a house after shooting at deputies during high speed chase McCracken County, KY - A Marshall County Sheriff’s Office deputy was returning home from an event around 8 p.m. on Nov. 7 and noticed a pickup truck towing a camper driving recklessly with a flat tire. The deputy tried to stop the driver in the area of Hardmoney Road in Paducah, but the driver kept on traveling and the deputy chased after him. As the vehicles were traveling, the camper disconnected from the truck on Hardmoney Rd. and the driver of the truck continued to drive away from the Marshall County deputy. Deputies from the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office and officers with the Paducah Police Department joined the chase that headed into the Lone Oak area. As the chase approached the city limits on Lone Oak Road, according to the police department, a police sergeant tried to use stop sticks to disable the vehicle. They say the police sergeant parked his police vehicle, with emergency lights activated, at the entrance to the former K-Mart building parking lot on Lone Oak Road. As the suspect vehicle passed by, they say the driver is believed to have fired a handgun in the direction of the police car. A bullet hit the rear passenger window a few feet from where the police sergeant was standing. According to the police department, he was not injured. According to the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office and KSP, the driver also fired shots in the direction of officers. The McCracken County Sheriff’s Office said several rounds hit the deputies’ vehicles. In an attempt to end the chase, officers conducted a pursuit intervention technique, known as a PIT maneuver, but the chase came to an end when the suspect crashed into a home on the 200 block of Lone Oak Road. The suspect was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. KSP said the driver, identified as 26-year-old Robert Wray, of Kevil, suffered a gunshot wound, which appears to have been self-inflicted. Investigators said no law enforcement officer fired their weapons during the incident. No one inside the house reported any injuries, and no deputies were injured during the chase.
