GURNEE, IL - On December 19th, 2020 at 2:32AM an officer on routine patrol for the Gurnee Police Department noticed a vehicle parked in a parking lot outside business hours. Upon approach, the officer noticed the driver of the vehicle asleep at the wheel. The officer then positioned his squad car behind the parked vehicle and again tried to contact the suspect. As the officer tried to wake the suspect up from sleeping, she inadvertently lifted her foot off the brake pedal and rolled back into the police cruiser. The officer eventually made contact with the suspect who began speaking incoherently with slurred speech. The officer further observed the suspect to have glassy and bloodshot eyes as well as the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from the driver's side cabin. The suspect gave the officer two clear plastic cups with clear liquid in them whereupon he could not detect the scent of alcohol. The suspect was then asked to step out of the vehicle to which she complied. Once outside the vehicle, the suspect consented to performing tests for the officer. For the first field sobriety test, the officer explained to the suspect to follow his pen using her eyes only. After several attempts, this test was abandoned due to the suspect being unable to following instructions. Before beginning the walk-and-turn test, the suspect squatted on the asphalt and began sobbing due to the "attention" on her. After claiming that she did not have any medical issues, she began the exercise unprompted while taking 14 steps forward before being asked to walk back to the starting position to perform the next test. For the one leg stand test, the suspect swayed while balancing, put her foot down multiple times, hopped on one leg to maintain balance, and used her arms to balance more than six inches from her body. Following the conclusion of the field sobriety test, the suspect was told she would be placed under arrest for driving under the influence, or DUI. While being arrested, the suspect slowly dropped to the kneeling position and once again began crying. The suspect was then transported to the officer's squad car to be placed in the back of the vehicle. The suspect then refused to sit in the squad car and would again drop to the asphalt and cry. At one point, a mother of one of the passengers arrived on scene to try to convince the suspect that going into the squad car voluntarily was in her best interest, but to no avail. Eventually, the suspect was transported to an immediate care center whereupon she spent the night while being medically evaluated. Although the suspect refused to provide an evidentiary sample of her blood, she recorded .215% blood alcohol content from a separate test performed by the medical staff.
