On May 26, 2024. An officer from the Menomonie Police Department was waiting at a red light when he observed a vehicle swerve out of its lane onto the sidewalk, hitting a rock before driving back onto the road. The officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and spoke with the driver (Jason) who said he had a hole in his brake line which caused him to swerve off the road to avoid colliding with other vehicles. The officer went back to his vehicle and began issuing citations. Another officer arrived and Jason admitted to him that he was texting and driving which is why he didn't see the car until the last second, before tossing a cigarette out of the window. The officers returned to Jason's vehicle to explain that he would be receiving six citations, including one for littering the cigarette, and one for obstructing because he lied about why he drove onto the sidewalk. Jason was found guilty for Resisting/Obstructing an Officer, Littering, Off Road Operation, Failure to Properly Maintain Brakes, Failure to Keep Vehicle Under Control, and Texting While Driving, totaling over $1200 in fines.
