On October 4, 2021 around 4:40 AM, Deputy Zachary Cupples from the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office noticed a silver Honda going at an excessive rate of speed by driving 70 MPH in a 45 MPH zone. Deputy Cupples decided to initiate a traffic stop, and Deputy Sieb arrived at the scene shortly afterwards to assist. The driver, 20-year-old Ariel Ayala, was asked where she was headed and why she was speeding. She responded by saying that she worked at the Walmart nearby and that she was running late for work. Deputy Cupples detected the odor of marijuana in the vehicle as he was speaking with Ariel, and he asked her if she had been smoking. She responded by stating that her boyfriend had a medical marijuana card, but she did not. She eventually handed the Deputy the joint that she had smoked earlier. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Ariel was asked to exit the vehicle as he conducted his investigation. Ariel was asked to perform standardized field sobriety exercises to determine whether or not she was able to operate a motor vehicle. The first exercise was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. For the following exercise, they walked across the highway to a level parking lot. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test, and her score was a 4 out of 8. The third exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and she displayed a lack of balance and fine motor coordination during that exercise. The fourth exercise was the Lack of Convergence test, and Deputy Cupples observed a lack of convergence in both eyes. The final exercise was the Modified Romberg Balance Test to estimate 30 seconds, and Ariel took 32 seconds to complete this test. Based on her appearance and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Deputy Cupples determined that Ariel was impaired by marijuana and placed her under arrest for driving under the influence. After she was placed in the police car, Deputy Cupples searched her car and waited for her boyfriend to arrive so he could take possession of the car. After her belongings were retrieved, the Deputy took Ariel to the Santa Rosa County Jail for further processing. Records indicate that she was booked into jail on October 4, 2021 5:28 AM, and she was released the same day at 1:10 PM after posting bond at $2500. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information).
