Around 11:41 PM on November 2, 2023, officers with the Rio Rancho Police Department were dispatched to the Latitudes at 2401 NMSR-528 in reference to a possible intoxicated driver. They were advised that a possibly intoxicated individual in a white 2019 Toyota Corolla was attempting to drive away. Officers first arrived on scene at 11:49 PM and they made contact with someone from the store. Afterwards, they made contact with the individual who had driven the car into the parking spot, and the individual was identified as 20-year-old Mona Herrera. A few minutes later, Officer Haughney arrived on scene and made contact with Mona. As Officer Haughney was speaking with Mona, he detected the odor of alcohol. Mona admitted to consuming Smirnoff approximately 30 minutes before operating the vehicle. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Mona was offered an opportunity to perform field sobriety exercises. Officer Haughney started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. The second field sobriety exercise was the Walk and Turn test and the third field sobriety exercise was the One Leg Stand test. Two additional alternative field sobriety exercises were administered as well. Based on the witness accounts, the odor of alcohol, Mona’s admission to consuming alcohol, and Mona’s inability to adequately complete the field sobriety exercises, Officer Haughney placed Mona under arrest for driving under the influence. Mona was transported to the Rio Rancho Police Department for initial processing. At the Rio Rancho Police Department, Officer Haughney read Mona the New Mexico Implied Breath Consent advisory form, and Mona agreed to submit breath samples. Officer Haughney administered the Intoxilyzer machine after Mona completed the observation period. Both Intoxilyzer results indicated a BAC of 0.18%, which was more than double the legal limit of 0.08% for drivers over the age of 21 and 9 times over the legal limit of 0.02% for drivers under 21. Mona was then transported to the Sandoval County Detention Center and booked for Aggravated DWI pursuant to 66-08-102(D)(1) -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information).
